Council hopes for positive pool reception

Posted December 1, 2008 10:37:00

Broken Hill City Council says it hopes the community will embrace the new pool that was opened on Saturday.

When completed, the swimming complex will have cost about $4.5 million.

Council general manager Frank Zaknich says he hopes residents will use the pool and increase their level of physical activity.

"For a city of 20,000 people, in order for it to be an ongoing, livable and viable city, these are the sorts of facilities we need in our community and the council saw that as key and we've implemented it and that's a real achievement for the community," he said.

The pool's manager, Steve Mahoney, says the new facility will get rid of the problems of pool sharing between the public and swimming groups.

"We were certainly crammed many times, and there was many a time when we were having swimming carnivals for four swimming clubs, four schools," he said.

"Even when we had schools over for PE, there were times when the general public felt as though they couldn't get into the pool and at times they were certainly right - this has eliminated all that."
