Advisory council urges adoption of Garling recommendations

Posted December 1, 2008 11:14:00

The Greater Western Area Health Service's advisory council says adoption of the recommendations in the Garling Report would increase the number of medical professionals in the region.

After a 10 month inquiry into New South Wales public hospitals, Peter Garling has made 139 recommendations for change.

The report points to staff shortages in the western region and suggests junior medical officers have a compulsory rural training term.

The chairman of the council, Steve Flecknoe-Brown, says the Government needs to adopt the recommendations.

"If this report is embraced and acted on it will take a lot of pressure off us because we'll have more medical staff, more support for nursing staff and the option of working in the rural areas will become more and more attractive to all of the workers," he said.
