Walgett Shire homes without power since Friday

Posted December 1, 2008 11:47:00

About 50 homes in the Walgett Shire have been without power since Friday night.

Country Energy says savage storms toppled a "significant number of power poles".

Its regional general manager, Peter Halliwell, says the worst hit location is Carinda, where 150 homes lost power.

He says a generator is being used to power the town and crews are working to fix the lines.

"We've had crews and helicopters up there since Friday night from all over northern New South Wales to assist in the rebuild of the line," he said.

"But it was a very significant storm, so there was a lot of damage done - obviously with the very wet conditions it's proving to be very trying."

Mr Halliwell says crews hope to have the lines fixed by midday.

"It brought down a significant number of poles on the line feeding Carinda," he said.

"All up we had about 28 kilometres of powerlines that were affected by the storm."
