Water restrictions for Dubbo

Posted December 1, 2008 12:18:00

Mild water restrictions come into force today in Dubbo, Wongarbon and Brocklehurst.

Dubbo City Council has imposed the level one restrictions to limit water use during summer.

The rules limit sprinkler use, but do not affect the use of hoses, watering cans or buckets.

The council's technical services director, Stewart McLeod, says it will enforce the rules.

"We hope that most people will comply with them, people will be given a warning if they're noticed not complying with the restrictions," he said.

"But there is always the opportunity for us to impose a $220 on-the-spot fine.

"We hope we don't have to do that, and I'm sure that Dubbo people are pretty responsible, so we won't have to."

The council says it does not expect to further tighten water restrictions over summer.

Mr McLeod says its decision to impose restrictions follows last year's New South Wales Government imposed level two restrictions.

"There was a fair community push for council to take the lead this summer - councillors and staff have listened to what the people were saying and we just felt that we should proactively go on level one water restrictions," he said.

"While the whole Murray-Darling Basin is short of water, Dubbo should be seen to be doing what it can to help out."
