Farm group backs GM crop report

Posted December 1, 2008 12:31:00

A farming group has welcomed a new Government report on the role of genetically modified (GM) crops in Australia.

On Friday, the Bureau of Rural Sciences released the report recommending GM crops as a valuable tool in the fight against insect and weed control.

The report says the development of GM insect resistant and herbicide tolerant crops will increase farmers' productivity and reduce the cost of insecticide use.

The Producers Forum WA chairman John Snooke says the report is further evidence of the benefits of GM crops to Western Australian farmers.

"Once again we see that this new report states that GM canola will bring increased yields and a greater choice of weed control options to GM canola and also that includes a lot of environmental friendly herbicides," he said.
