Cattle prod DSE on fire risk

Posted December 1, 2008 12:49:00

Cattle are being moved into the Barmah State Forest on the Murray River north of Shepparton, in protest at a ban on grazing this summer.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) says the forest is badly drought affected and cannot sustain cattle.

But opponents say there is a high risk a fire will spread to the town of Barmah, because there's chest high grass in parts of the forest.

Max Rheese, from the Rivers and Red Gum Alliance, says the DSE has not responded to their concerns.

"We've had no response at all from DSE which is a real worry because this community feels very exposed to the fire risk and we've written to the minister and we've written to the DSE Secretary and we can't get any sort of response," he said.
