Mackay puts focus on water safety

The Mackay region is believed to be the only place in Queensland taking part in a national focus on water safety this week.

The initiative began in New South Wales several years ago, and Mackay's first Water Safe Week began on the weekend.

Free swimming assessments for children, as well as water safety workshops, will be on offer throughout the week.

Manager of recreational services Onno Vanes says it has organised a broad range of activities so it is of interest to all ages.

"We didn't want to focus specifically on the serious side of water safety, we wanted to have some fun as well and combine the fun elements such as Mission Inflatable with a ... 10 to 15 minute briefing as well," he said.

"CPR briefings will be conducted by St John's Ambulance, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Services will be an important aspect, so we're really trying to have as much variety in the week itself."
