New faces for Gippsland councils

Posted December 1, 2008 14:46:00

Gippsland's councils will welcome some new faces after local government elections at the weekend.

Two candidates from the Gippsland by-election in June have won spots on Gippsland councils.

Labor candidate Darren McCubbin has been re-elected to the Wellington Shire Council, and the Liberal candidate Rohan Fitzgerald will represent the Dunbar ward on Latrobe City Council.

He unseated deputy mayor Davis Wilson.

In Baw Baw, five councillors missed out on re-election, including Mayor Dick Van Leuwen.

The controversial Bass Coast councillor Kelly Simrajh was also unsuccessful.

A number of sitting councillors in the South Gippsland Shire did not nominate for another term, so the council will welcome five new faces.

And in East Gippsland, former mayors Mendy Urie and Jane Rowe and councillor Ben Buckly were all re-elected.
