Wayne Bennett's first official training session with St George Illawarra has been given the thumbs up by dual international winger Wendell Sailor.

Sailor played for the Brisbane Broncos under Bennett from 1993 to 2001 before switching to rugby union.

He returned to league with the Dragons last season after serving a two-year drug ban.

Sailor says Bennett is one of the greatest coaches of all time because he knows what makes a player tick.

"He finds out what makes you play the best, whether it's niggling you, like he does with me, or whether it's stroking your ego a little bit," he said.

"Obviously a player like me doesn't need his ego stroked but obviously he needs to to tell me what I need to do to get better and that's all he needs to do.

"Also, he just cares about you."
