A man has died in a house fire in Mulgrave in Melbourne's south-east early this morning.

More than 15 firefighters fought the blaze at a unit in Wanda Street.

An elderly woman was rescued by firefighters and taken to Hospital.

Commander Darren Davies from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) says it appears the man who died went back inside the house to retrieve possessions.

"Under no circumstances should anyone who has a fire in their home return into the building to rescue their belongings. It just isn't worth your life," he said.

Arson squad detectives have been called in to investigate the fire.

Investigators will also be called in to examine the cause of a fire at a smallgoods factory at Keilor East.

The fire caused about $500,000 damage.
