Conservationist say that more than 4,000 hectares of native South Australian bushland is under threat as a result of Federal Government funding cuts.

After 15 years of operation, the Bush For Life program has had its request for continued funding knocked back.

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the scheme is significant and she will tell that to the Senate today.

"We've got a hundred thousand volunteer hours that get put into these programs," she said.

"It seems like a silly mistake for the Minister to not continue funding and I would like to see him reconsider."

A spokesman for the Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, says the funding selection process was competitive and other projects were shown to have more significant outcomes.
