Chinese midfielder Gao Leilei is training with Perth Glory in the hope of playing for the A-League outfit, club officials said on Monday.

Perth coach Dave Mitchell has given Gao, 28, an opportunity to join the Glory squad this week.

Gao is on the look out for a new club after parting company with A-League rivals, Wellington Phoenix, last month.

Mitchell said Glory has a full complement of foreign players for this season and he will take a closer look at Gao with a view to next season.

"He is a quality player and I have been impressed with what I've seen when we've played against him," Mitchell said.

"We are actively looking at our options for next season and to be able to see a player first hand and have them train with the squad is definitely the best way to determine how they would fit into our system."

Gao made eight appearances for the Phoenix this season, starting in seven matches.
