Qld beef industry looks to top summer season

Posted December 2, 2008 09:17:00

Queensland beef producers could be facing one of their best summer seasons in more than a decade.

Meat and Livestock Australia says widespread rain in northern Australia has helped to improve the sector's outlook, together with a low Australian dollar and reduced production costs.

Analyst Peter Weeks says it is a welcome change for many graziers who have battled tough conditions for years.

"Things are shaping up much better in Queensland - we're getting very good feed conditions, the herds are starting to build up - they're probably looking at the best season for cattle that they've had for at least a decade," he said.

"Prices are up a little, oil's coming down and interest rates are coming down, so all those things add to the positive feel, as does the dollar falling."
