Rural Qld positive amid world financial woes

Posted December 2, 2008 09:20:00

Despite the global economic crisis, a new survey shows rural confidence in Queensland has improved.

The Rabobank survey shows 22 per cent of farmers across Australia expect conditions to improve over the next year.

Sixty-five per cent reported they were yet to feel the impact of the world financial turmoil.

Rabobank's Peter Ciranni says early summer rain in large areas of Queensland and a falling dollar have lifted sentiment.

"Again, I think we're shielded from the global crisis to a fair extent because of the reduction in the dollar," he said.

"If we hadn't had the reduction in the dollar, the commodities overall would be starting to feel the pinch," he said.

"But [with] the reduced dollar and more return for our commodities, we're just getting a better return for our product."
