Higher demand boosts flying doctor services

Posted December 2, 2008 09:22:00

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) has expanded its services across south-eastern Australia, including Broken Hill, over the past year.

There are more dental clinics, women's GP clinics and consultations using remote technology, as well as an 85 per cent jump in emergency evacuations.

The president of the RFDS's south-eastern section, Joan Treweeke, says the lift in services is due to a rise in demand.

"We live out here knowing that we are a long way away from towns and hospitals, but you do know that when you need help, you can make a phone call and it comes and well they call it the mantle of safety - that exactly what it is," she said.
