The Fisheries Department says it has found nothing to worry about in water and fish samples taken from Lake Bonney at Barmera.

Thousands of fish, mostly bony bream, were found washed up on the lake's shore two weeks ago.

The Department's Vic Neverauskas says a surge of hot weather and thunderstorms are the most likely cause of the fish deaths.

"There's no indication of any kind of bacterial infection, viral infection, fungal infection or an indication of any kind of toxic chemicals that may have been involved in causing the mortalities," he said.

"The one thing we still haven't got the result on is the condition on the gills, so we're still waiting on that."
