New performance figures have revealed thousands of passengers are abandoning Sydney Ferries' services.

The company's annual report shows almost 14 million people travelled on Sydney Ferries in the last year, down 1.2 per cent.

The organisation also failed to meet 11 of 14 performance benchmarks, including reliability.

The number of reported marine accidents rose from 68 to 109.

The Transport Minister, David Campbell, says he has told Sydney Ferries it needs to lift its game.

Mr Campbell says he expects next year will be a different story.

"The annual report that's referred to is for the period ending the 30th of June, 2008," he said.

"The CEO of Sydney Ferries also advises me of strong customer growth in the second half of this calendar year.

"The Government knows that Sydney Ferries needs to change, Sydney Ferries knows it needs to change and that's why the Government is acting on the key recommendations from the Walker report."

The Premier, Nathan Rees, is due to make an announcement on Parramatta ferries this morning.
