Development law debate to resume

Parliamentary scrutiny of the South Australian Government's proposed development laws will continue today, after the Opposition delayed proceedings for an extra week.

The changes to the residential development code are designed to speed up the assessment and approval process for new buildings.

The Opposition is concerned it may allow character homes on large blocks to be demolished to make way for subdivision.

Opposition development spokesman David Ridgway says he was only given a copy of the redrafted bill at the eleventh hour last week.

"It will have a significant impact on our suburbs, we'll have you know unsightly development in the suburbs if we don't get it right," he said.

"The Government has had 10 drafts of this residential code, they're getting it close to being right but we're concerned it hasn't been well enough thought through and that's why we delayed the proceeding for another week."
