Rees to introduce new alcohol trading laws

Posted December 2, 2008 10:36:00

The New South Wales Premier, Nathan Rees, says new legislation will be introduced into Parliament today, aimed at reducing alcohol-related violence.

Under the changes, mandatory 2:00am lockouts will be introduced for licensed premises with the most problems, there will be restrictions on the number of drinks served after a certain time and plastic cups will replace glass.

Mr Rees says he did not want to wait for a Supreme Court challenge to the regulations by nine hotels because summer is already underway.

He says regulations listing 48 high-risk venues will be converted into law.

"These laws are aimed at reducing alcohol-related violence, most particularly those horrific cases of glassing," he said.

"We think that the community's expectations around curbing alcohol-related violence is being met by this legislation."
