Oppn wants hold on hospital plans

Posted December 2, 2008 10:39:00

The Tasmanian Opposition says the Government should delay building a new Royal Hobart Hospital until there is some economic security.

The Premier said yesterday that the global financial crisis has made it challenging for the government to meet the commitment to fully fund the hospital with cash surpluses.

The Government had planned to save $150 million a year for the next six years to build the hospital.

But Liberal Health spokesman Brett Whiteley has told ABC Local Radio that while Tasmanians want a new hospital, they do not want it at the expense of improving health services.

"I think we need to very careful that the building of a $1 billion plus infrastructure project, albeit it would be lovely to have it, we need to be careful that that doesn't hit on the recurrent expenditure and the current revenue that is available to run our hospitals," Mr Whiteley said.
