Adam Scott has been forced out of this week's Australian PGA Championship after injuring his knee while body-surfing, his manager said.

Scott, one of the favourites in the $US1 million event at Coolum, twisted his knee while wading through water at a nearby beach, he said.

"He was coming out of the surf on Sunday morning and he's obviously stood in a sand depression," manager Justin Cohen said.

"He went for a body surf and was making his way through the shallow water and twisted his knee a little bit.

"It's a very minor, little issue with his knee and we fully expect him to be back in action and ready to go for the Aussie Open next week."

Mr Cohen said Scott, who is yet to win a four-round tournament on Australian soil, was disappointed at having to withdraw from the PGA Championship.

"This is an event he loves coming back for, as are all the Aussie events and it's very disappointing for him not to be playing," he said.

World number 17 Scott was a leading contender to win the PGA Championship along with defending champion Peter Lonard and major winner Geoff Ogilvy.

He was Australia's second highest ranked player in the field behind the 14th-ranked Ogilvy.

American John Daly, who missed the cut in last weekend's Australian Masters, will play at Coolum where he was disqualified in 2002 after tossing his putter into the lake beside the 18th green.
