Liberals say pamphlet not anti gay

Counsel for the Tasmanian Liberal Party has told an anti-discrimination hearing that voters can not be wrapped in cotton wool.

Transgender woman Martine Delaney claims a brochure sent out by the Liberals during the 2006 state election campaign incited hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.

The brochure sent to 109,000 Tasmanians attacked the Tasmanian Greens policies including allowing same sex marriage.

Ms Delaney claims the brochure shows contempt towards the gay community but lawyer for the State Liberal Party, Michael O'Farrell, has told the Tasmanian Anti-discrimination tribunal strong language can be expected in any political debate.

In closing submissions, Mr O'Farrell said the brochure was a political advertisement not to vote for the Greens and their policies.

He said it was in no way directed at same sex couples.

The tribunal has reserved its decision.
