Govt urged to offer $34m childcare centre rescue package

Posted December 2, 2008 12:39:00

The Federal Government has been asked to spend an extra $34 million to ensure all ABC childcare centres remain open until at least March next year.

Receivers are expected to give an indication later this week of the future of 386 centres, which may have to close.

They include three centres in the Riverina.

Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union national secretary Louise Tarrant says the Government needs to provide a rescue package to buy more time for child care workers and parents.

"So we'll be going and seeking approximately $34 million worth of funding," she said.

"We think that will be enough to take all those centres through until the end of March and ensure at least parents and workers have some level of satisfaction of the Christmas period with a view to trying to make sure their centres have a future."
