Carnarvon scoops award for disability campaign

Posted December 2, 2008 13:01:00

The Shire of Carnarvon has won the top prize at the Disability Services Commission's Count Us In Awards.

The shire won the Dr Louisa Alessandri Award for Excellence for its Opening Doors Campaign, which also won the Local Government Award.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage local businesses and agencies to provide fair access for people with disabilities.

Shire president Dudley Maslen says it provides people with disabilities with greater opportunities to participate in community activities.

"The Shire of Carnarvon has 1,300 people that have some sort of a disability and that works out at about 20 per cent of our population," he said.

"Now this effort is to make sure that they have their opportunity to be included and to enjoy the facilities that all the rest of us that have no disabilities take for granted."
