Bell Bay generator off-line

An ageing gas unit at the Bell bay Power Station has broken down.

The Greens believe the breakdown is costing the station $70,000 a day in lost revenue.

The Green's Kim Booth asked about the unit in a parliamentary committee scrutinising the Hydro.

Hydro's Chief Executive Vince Hawksworth confirmed the generator is not working.

He says the power station is very useful because it provides one third of Tasmania's non-hydro power.

But he says the breakdown is not remarkable because the station is old and soon to be replaced.

Mr Booth says the cost of the shut down could be millions.

But Mr Hawksworth rejected Mr Booths' $70,000 a day cost.

The Energy Minister David Llewellyn says it is cheaper to import power across Basslink than produce it at the gas station.

The breakdown is being investigated and the prognosis is not yet known.
