A new uniform for Australian sailors has been unveiled in Darwin.

The new look avoids bell-bottoms and straight-lined formality and instead mirrors the army's casual camouflage gear and pattern.

But the Lieutenant Commander of HMAS Albany Viktor Pilicic said the uniforms are not designed to help seaman hide from the enemy.

"You don't need camo on our ships," he told the ABC. "So it's purely for recognition as being Australian."

The two-piece outfit has been trialed in Darwin and Defence personnel say it is easier and more comfortable to wear in the tropics than the previous uniforms.

The traditional blazing whites of the dress and office uniform will still be worn, but officers and sailors will now be free to wear the new navy uniform in public.
