The West Australian Premier, Colin Barnett, says he wants to extend weekday trading hours by mid next year.

Mr Barnett went to the election with a promise to negotiate weekday shopping hours, but ruled out across-the-board Sunday trading.

The Premier says he is looking at extending hours by at least an hour-and-a-half.

He says he will have formal meetings with major industry groups early next year to discuss the options for retailers.

"Just as people will argue consumers should be able to shop when it suits them, equally retail businesses should be able to choose whether to open or close their doors when it suits them," he said.

"I don't like the idea of shops being compelled to stay open if it's not viable for them to do so."
