Cat registration scheme to cost council $500K

Posted December 2, 2008 14:49:00

The Whitsunday Regional Council says if it is forced to introduce compulsory cat registration, it will have to spend about $500,000 to build new cat pounds to house the stray cats.

The Queensland Government is considering introducing a new law which will force local governments to register cats and dogs and also make it compulsory to microchip and desex cats.

The council's director of community and environment, Gavin Crawford, says if the community does not support the proposal, the council will seek further advice from the Government.

"What it will mean is a significant amount of extra capital infrastructure to improve the pounds in Bowen, Proserpine and also in Collinsville, which have significant costs involved - we estimate up to $500,000 in capital costs," he said.

Residents can have their say by filling in an online survey on the council website over the next two weeks.
