Three people have been killed and up to 30 injured in a blast on a passenger train in India's north-eastern state of Assam.

Police say many of the victims were women and children.

The bomb went off as the train stropped at Diphu station in the hill district of Assam.

Police say one person died at the scene and two others died later.

Dozens of casualties were also taken to local hospitals.

Many of the passengers on the train to upper Assam were women and children.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, but the line has been attacked before by separatist groups demanding an independent homeland for the local Karbi tribes in north-eastern India.

The rail track has now been closed and police have begun their investigation.
