Polluters meet to discuss ETS

Posted December 2, 2008 16:34:00

Some of Australia's biggest carbon emitters have told a forum in Brisbane that they are committed to reducing their greenhouse gas levels.

Petroleum company BP Australia says the Federal Government's proposed emissions trading scheme (ETS) is an important step in addressing climate change.

Environmental Policy Director Mark Proegler told today's forum on climate change and peak oil that the oil industry accounts for about 15 per cent of Australia's total carbon emissions.

"It's one of the fastest-growing areas of emissions, and it's one that needs to be stabilised if we're going to reach the goals to address climate change," he said.

Andrew Mudge from Virgin Blue outlined the measures the airline is taking to cut its emissions, including weight reduction and improved flight planning.

The Government is due to release the final design of its emissions trading scheme later this month.
