Bracken, Denton star as wickets tumble at Bellerive

Posted December 2, 2008 18:30:00

A staggering 17 wickets fell on the opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash between Tasmania and New South Wales in Hobart.

Nathan Bracken took 5 for 14 for the Blues while Gerard Denton snared 5 for 18 for the Tigers as ball well and truly dominated bat on a Bellerive Oval green-top.

One-day international specialist Bracken is playing in just his second match for his state since returning from a hamstring strain.

The Tigers were languishing at 7 for 87 at stumps after bowling the visitors out for just 172 earlier in the day.

Only in-form opener Phillip Hughes made any score of significance for the Blues, crafting a well-made 93.

All-rounder Moises Henriques contributed 38 in quick time but six New South Wales batsmen were dismissed for single-digit scores, including three ducks.

Tasmania's effort with the willow was even more appalling with first-drop Dane Anderson top-scoring with 25.

Three Tigers batsmen also made ducks.

Gerard Denton (23) and captain Daniel Marsh (21) will resume on day two for the home side.
