'Shonky operators' caught out by building laws

Posted December 2, 2008 19:36:00

The Queensland Government says the building industry would be filled with "shonky operators", if not for strict rules and sanctions.

Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten says there are now 75,000 residential construction contractors in Queensland, with 125 being licensed every week.

Mr Schwarten has told Parliament that the Building Services Authority has been forced to act against many of them.

"In the past 12 months, some 91 individuals and 50 companies have been excluded for five years due to their involvement in a financial collapse," he said.

"Twenty-eight individuals were banned for life due to their involvement in a second financial collapse.

"If it wasn't for the laws, this industry would be a haven for shonky operators."
