Victorian Premier John Brumby has accused the Federal Opposition of hypocrisy in their anti-North South pipeline stance.

A Private Members Bill was introduced to Federal Parliament on Monday night by the Liberal Member for McEwen, Fran Bailey.

It aims to stop the pipeline which would send a third of water savings achieved from irrigation upgrades in the Victoria's north to Melbourne.

Coalition senators supported similar amendments to water legislation, but they have been voted down by the Federal Government.

Mr Brumby says it seems odd the Opposition supports a similar project elsewhere.

"Have a look at the comments of Malcolm Turnbull about an identical scheme put in place in Western Australia which invested in infrastructure, delivered half the savings to the people of Perth and half to irrigators," he said.

"Identical scheme, strongly supported by Malcolm Turnbull and so you know Fran's is just another example unfortunately of rank political opportunism, nothing more, nothing less."
