Victoria Police shot a man in the leg during a confrontation outside a home at Kurunjang, near Melton, in Melbourne's west late last night.

Police say the 29-year-old was armed with knives and a spear.

Inspector Ian Geddes says four shots were fired when the man confronted police while they were helping a woman and several children into a patrol car.

"The male person was behaving extremely aggressively and threatening police as he approached them across the roadway," he said.

Capsicum spray was also used on the man.

"The incident is the subject of an ethical standards investigation and the actual times of deployment of both capsicum spray and the use of the firearm are part of that investigation."

The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
