McEwen saddling up for Tour Down Under

Posted December 3, 2008 09:14:00

Three-time Tour de France green jersey winner Robbie McEwen has confirmed he will compete in next month's Tour Down Under in South Australia.

The race has attracted increased international interest with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong due to make his comeback in the event.

McEwen says he is excited about the race.

"I'm racing in 2009 with a new team out of Russia called Katyusha, so I'm looking forward to hooking up with some new team-mates and also hooking up again with some former team-mates, so it's all looking good," he said.

McEwen said as a sprinter he will be riding a different race to Armstrong, but will still be eyeing some stage wins.

"Lance and I are at almost opposite ends of the spectrum but I think it'll be a good thing for the race, it'll bring a lot more attention," he said.

"But for myself I'm just looking forward to getting there in good shape and trying to win some more stages in the Tour Down Under."
