ABC stalwarts "Rampaging" Roy Slaven and HG Nelson are leaving the national broadcaster for the world of commercial radio.

Triple J confirmed in a statement last night that after 22 years of presenting iconic programs such as This Sporting Life, Festival Of The Boot and Golden Ring Show, the pair have quit the station

Triple J manager Linda Bracken says they will be sadly missed.

"They are more than a radio program, they have become their own radio comedy genre," she said in a statement.

"It's been a joy and a privilege to work with them."

Triple M have reportedly signed the larrikins for the drive slot on Mondays and Fridays - pitting them against popular duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee.

Lets how they get a big fat sign on fee, so they can do six months on crap radio, plead artistic differences, and get back to where they belong at the ABC.

While this duo arguably brought some great comedy moments that reflected upon Australian culture, they're tenure on commercial radio will be short lived. Just my opinion - what's yours?

Whenever I watch ABC TV I see ads for ABC commercial activities (as well as some that don't really have a direct connection to the ABC).

That would be because the profit motive, instead of dedication to Australian culture, sucks the life and originality out of the stuff. Also, commercial audiences are lowest common denominator stuff. Just dig up a back yard and put a few pot plants in. That'll keep them interested. Nothing is impervious to the destructive tendencies of commercial crap tv executives.

Advertising on the ABC would be highly lucrative. Commercial stations know it's what advertisers want as the ABC viewers on the whole are more educated and wealthier than their lot. They'd lose millions.

Sneer all you want at quality tv given a chance to succeed because it's not purely about bringing in advertising. We'll still enjoy it.

Noodles, apart from your IQ theorising, I agree that commercial TV is becoming more and more culturally and educationally bereft.

Bold & the Beautiful on a 6pm timeslot is a frightening sign of things to come.

Roh & HG, bless them, entertain by holding up a mirror to our culture.

A little more cultural examination, some more educative content, and less crime/medical/teen angst may see a very large audience tuning back in....

Noodles, your comments regarding the intelligence of a population based on the number of TV or radio shows they tune in to from each particular provider shows just how reversed you got it.

What particular shows are the harbinger of infinite wisdom, and which particular TV station reduces viewers IQ? And don't get you started on Foxtel right???

It sounds like somebody from the lowest common denominator pool themselves has issues.

                Rubbish!
There is as much good viewing on commercial TV as their is on the ABC - and as much rubbish.
The only accurate part of that statement is "it never happens the other way around" because who would want to take a pay cut???? the ABC doesn't have the funds to purchase the top of the line programing available elsewhere.

Of course you have to accept that a half hour show is actually 22mins long... is that for eight minutes of ads you have to watch 22 mins of show (I'm channeling the ghost of Kerry Packer)

And wasn't the point of pay TV that because your paying no more ads. Boy that lasted.

            Fresh?

            They aren't lettuce.

What they are is a unique blend of satire and wit and a damn good laugh on a Sunday afternoon and becasue they aren't (weren't) commercial they weren't trying to sell you something.

That's why I love the ABC. If I wantto go buy something I'll go to a shop. I demand the right to lock my door on the commercial world when I get home.

I'm going to start downloading the back issues of TSL when I get home to keep them for posterity.

The ABC should pay these two more. They are more than worth it.

Perhaps commercial media organisations should have to pay royalties to the ABC to get their hands on talent nurtured and developed at taxpayer expense by the national broadcaster.

Simon anyone who has ever worked for the National Broadcaster would know that the ABC does not nurture and develop talent...they exploit it.

It is Roy and HG that have nurtured and developed their talent so good on them for seeking top dollar for their unique skills. They deserve it.

This is a sad day. Like many others before, i.e. Maynard F Sharp Crabs, Dylan Lewis and Myf; that give it a go for the fast and big bucks to varying degrees of success, Roy and HG may have financial security (for a while) and it will be arguable whether the listening audiance at TM (sorry can't bring myself to type the whole thing, I hate this type of radio) will absorb Roy and HG like their fans on Triple J and the ABC. The transition from a role where they have an no agenda, are free from commerical pressure and complete artistic license to one of time constraints, loosing their artistic independance, will have to answer to some knob who is only interested in the ratings performance, cut their stream of conciousness off for an add or news break or worse some twat coming with a voice over. Will we ever here HG weezing with laughter in the background as Roy launches into a tyrade about the quality of the meat tray won recently at the Marble Bar darts night? See you later boys, I really hope it works for you, and if it doesn't and you find yourselves back at Triple J I will be tuning in. But for the trip on TM, I am sorry.

This is the best news I've heard in years! Finally I can actually listen to good music on a Sunday afternoon instead of these clowns.

hooray...... sorry to all those who loved them but i find there inane unfunny chatter about sport really boring (especiallly all the stuff about rugby leage) and they never played anywhere near enough music and look at them they really don't have a place on YOUTH radio.

now maybe i'll listen to my faverite radio station on a sunday to :D

The final remaining reason for my listening to JJJ is now gone....but not for lonh, I hope...

Remember when The Fat and Good News Week went from ABC to commercial? The Fat ran out of puff and GNW is a pathetic, forced unfunny shadow of its former glorious self...like Mikey Robbins, its had the stuffing knocked out of it..

And now, the only pair that put the undue seriousness with which we treat football in its proper ridiculous perspective are lost to a great majority of us!

Still, I suppose it will be good for the booksellers....

Just watch, everytime a successful program moves from our public broadcaster to a commercial one it dies.

I hope like Andrew Denton they go to MMM make a fortune, see how commercial media works, have a great time, get spat out and return with awesome anecdotes of their time there to Aunty with a new twist. The renewed energy that will give them will make for even better performances on the ABC. Their wit is like Aunty Jack, Norman Gunston and Dame Edna and always returns home as commercial media can't handle the irreverence. Think Graham Kennedy in Coast to Coast and the Farrrrk(crow call) out rage.
I look forward to your success on MMM and eventual return somewhere :)

Most of ewes rugby comedy went strait over me head, but ewes made it heaps better to undstand da state a origen wen it was on da telly. I near cacked meself listening to use at the limpics and was right proud for Australia when i herd ewes were broadcasting to the world! Heyzus! It still makes me chuckle just thinkin bout that.

Wonder how long THIS triple M venture will last. They bring in shows and then cancel them due to poor ratings so quickly these days. Its such a shame. They used to be good now they get rid of high rating shows and put on low rating ones that dont last - good move.

Thanks for all the enjoyment you have given me and millions of others over the years.
I hope it works out for you.
I'll try to listen but I think commercial radio will be too much for my system.

I honestly haven't sat down and listened to them for a long time. Sunday arvo is when we should be kicking back with music. It will be good to hear the tunes happening.
Good luck to them though. They deserve the big bucks, and anyone who says they're selling out, they've been going 20 years, they have a right to

Never liked them (save for the few genuinely funny Winter Olympic moments). No great loss to me - but I may well be in the minority. So life goes on. Myf left the ABC and life goes on. Now can we convince Red Symons to jump ship as well?

As with many other clever and witty shows that go from the ABC to commercial media, it won't last because the majority commercial audience is not intelligent enough to understand this humour. The ABC audience will not be able to tolerate moving across and it will all close down. Meanwhile some new presenter(s) will move into Roy & HG's old spot and ABC audience will be rewarded with some new talent that would never be given a go in other media.
A win/win for the ABC audience..

This was inevitable in a way. I started listening to Roy and HG in my youth, but after 22 years I no longer fit the JJJ demographic of Australia's national youth network. I imagine that is why the first comment here is good riddance - no doubt someone who wasn't even born when Greig and John called their first grand final.
I just hope having to be commercial doesn't affect their material. And does have MMM have podcasts?
