Central Vic firefighting resources bolstered

Posted December 3, 2008 10:11:00

Firefighting resources have been boosted in central Victoria.

The Bendigo fire district has an additional 48 firefighters for summer.

Two helicopters and a water bombing plane have been based in Bendigo.

A fire management officer for the Department of Sustainability and Environment, Les Vearing, says the aircraft are a great asset, but there is a limit to how much they can do.

"They're only support to people, our people on the ground and again once the big bushfire gets going, there's not a lot you they can do, so people shouldn't be relying on helicopters to put fires out, we still all need to be vigilant and I guess stop fires from starting in the first place and just don't rely on helicopters or fire service to be at your house to put your fire out," he said.
