Dairy farm demand boosts prices

Posted December 3, 2008 10:22:00

Economists say a heightened demand for dairy farms in south-west Victoria is pushing up prices.

According to the ANZ Bank's Regional and Rural Quarterly report, the region is experiencing a mini-boom.

ANZ economist Paul Deane says properties are fetching up to $10,000 an acre.

He says buyers are looking for areas with predictable rainfall.

"Certainly for the southern regions where ... rainfall is more predictable and ... higher rainfall overall, I mean those areas are certainly in demand given the way seasons have gone ... north of the divide and so people are looking for that more predictable rainfall," he said.
