Council pushes to protect child care places

Posted December 3, 2008 10:25:00

Ballarat council has moved to protect almost 700 child care places in the city.

Eight ABC Learning centres in Ballarat have been caught up in the collapse of the business, and it could signal the closure of the company's Sebastopol centre.

The council's Carolyn Barrie says it has registered an expression of interest with the ABC Learning administrator.

She says the council wants to ensure the centres are financially sustainable in the long-term.

"Making sure that in the future there's some sustainable model. Now it's not necessarily about the City of Ballarat delivering those services. Whilst we do deliver some services, we would rather play the role of advocating or facilitating the long-term future," she said.
