Posted December 3, 2008 11:14:00

US movie star Daryl Hannah is on the Sea Shepherd's anti-whaling ship, the Steve Irwin, which is leaving Brisbane for the Southern Ocean.

The 60-metre ship, carrying 48 crew, plans to intercept the Japanese whaling fleet by mid-December.

Film star Daryl Hannah is on board for the first leg of the voyage.

She says she is passionate about being involved.

"I've always been interested in protecting endangered species and protecting life on this planet - I think it's a natural instinct," she said.

The Steve Irwin leaves the Port of Brisbane tonight.
