Tour Down Under organisers have lifted the cap on the number of people who can race in the public event.

They say there has been a surge of interest because seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will make his comeback to competitive cycling at the Tour in January.

Premier Mike Rann says in the past the Breakaway Tour has had a limit of 5,000 people and has never been reached.

He says the interest in Armstrong has meant the Breakaway Tour is nearly full and the cap has been lifted to allow unlimited entries.

"This time last year, there were 800 people registered, now we've got basically just under 5,000," he said.

"About a thousand of those from interstate and overseas. People from the US, New Zealand, Singapore, Finland, Sweden, Canada."
