Toddler's balcony fall prompts flyscreen warning

Posted December 3, 2008 11:29:00

Kidsafe is warning parents to be aware that most flyscreens do not prevent children from falling out of windows.

A three-year-old boy fell from a third floor balcony in Sydney's south-west last night.

He was taken to Westmead Children's Hospital with suspected head and internal injuries.

Christine Erskine from Kidsafe says it is important furniture is kept away from open windows.

She also says parents need to be aware that flyscreens are not very strong.

"Flyscreens are only designed as things to keep flies out, not children," she said.

"The weight of a child, if they're pushed or bounced, they will actually fall through that flyscreen and their fall not be protected at all, so there's certainly a concern.

"Nurses and doctors in the trauma area are seeing these types of injuries."
