Anti-logging group questions koala rescue plan

Posted December 3, 2008 12:48:00

A New South Wales far south coast anti-logging group has labelled a Government plan to save a native species "a joke".

The State Government has launched a koala recovery program in NSW forests designed to rehabilitate habitat and protect them from threats.

But Chipstop convener Harriet Swift says that logging of the Bermagui forest is in direct opposition to the Government's plan.

She says logging must stop if the the species is to survive.

"It is quite absurd for the Government to be saying that it is going to be looking after koala habitats as a way of ensuring the future of the species while it is logging Bermagui forests which are absolutely critical habitat for the koalas on the far south coast," she said.
