Row over digital TV switchover

The Federal Government will oppose moves by the Opposition to amend a Bill on the switchover to digital television.

From 2010, analogue television signals will be switched off across the country.

The Opposition wants the Government to come up with a set of standards that ensure the analogue signal is not switched off until the vast majority of households can receive digital television.

It also wants the Government to give regular progress reports to Parliament on the level of digital television uptake.

The Opposition's amendments were passed in the Senate, but the Government says it will oppose them when the Bill returns to the lower house.
