Drought taking toll on beef producers: Mayor

A far western Queensland Mayor says beef producers across a vast area of the state are still struggling with drought and are far from expecting a bumper season.
Meat and Livestock Australia says producers could be facing one of their best summers in more than a decade, with improved seasonal conditions, a lower Australian dollar and reduced production costs.
But the Boulia Mayor Rick Britton says conditions are far from ideal in his shire, with less than 5 per cent of cattle left in the region.
"The Boulia Shire is 61,000 square kilometres, normal carrying capacity for the shire is 184,000 head of cattle at the last count and talking around to people there's no more than 7,000 head of cattle left in the shire, we're a big paddock out here," he said.
