Australian cricket team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris has denied speculation that captain Ricky Ponting's career will be cut short by a wrist injury.

The 34-year-old had surgery on his right wrist four months ago and has been forced to tape it and ice it ever since.

Kountouris says Ponting will visit his surgeon in Melbourne tomorrow where a management plan will be devised.

He has denied the injury could force Ponting out of the game earlier than expected.

"He's really not struggling too much," he said.

"I think too much has been made out of this. He's played in every game, he hasn't missed one training session and I don't know whether you guys have noticed anything different in his performance, but he's actually functioning OK."

He said Ponting is unlikely to miss any cricket because of it.

"He's got a little bit of pain in his wrist, no more than what other players carry in other parts of their bodies," he said.

"He's really not having anything of significance that he has to miss any games.

"It would be ridiculous for him to miss any games or any training at this point in time.

"If he bats for a long time it might hurt or the day after it might hurt, but he generally functions pretty well.

"He made 100 in that time and he made 79 the other day without too many hassles and all we do is put some ice on it at the end of the day's play and get on with things."
