The Bulldogs have sacked forward Reni Maitua after he missed a team training session on Monday.

The club says his contract has been terminated for repeated breaches of discipline.

Maitua has 48 hours to appeal against his sacking.

The Bulldogs have offered to give Maitua some counselling to try and sort out his future.

"It is a disappointing outcome, particularly only one month into preseason training," Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg said.

"Reni missed the team's training session on Monday and neglected to call anyone at the club with an explanation.

"That simply is not good enough.

"Reni has a pretty strong track record. We have no doubt that Reni is a talented footballer but it takes more than that to be a part of the Bulldogs."

Maitua was handed his marching orders on Tuesday when he fronted the club's board.

"I am sure he is very disappointed in his own actions but the only person that got him in this position was himself," Mr Greenberg said.
