ABC managing director Mark Scott says the national broadcaster is being held back by the time it is taking to roll out a national broadband network (NBN) for Australia.

The Federal Government is currently considering six bids to give 98 per cent of Australians access to high-speed internet.

Speaking at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia conference in Sydney, Mr Scott said rural and regional audiences are missing out.

"We've started iView... Australia's first internet television service, but it needs fast internet to work properly, so half the population can experience it in a satisfactory way but half the audience can't," he said.

"It's very important to the ABC because we are more important as a broadcaster in rural and regional Australia than anywhere else."
