Rice in India to soothe subcontinent tensions

Posted December 3, 2008 18:36:00

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in New Delhi as part of an intense American effort to ease tension between India and Pakistan.

Ties between the nuclear-armed rivals have become strained after last week's assault on Mumbai by Islamic militants which left 188 people dead.

Dr Rice wants both sides to cooperate in wiping out terrorism.

"I want to consult with the Indian Government further about what we can do to help," she said.

"I've already noted that everyone should cooperate fully, and Pakistan in particular needs to cooperate fully and transparently.

"I was pleased to see the statements of the Pakistani government, that they intend to do so."

A group fighting Indian control of disputed Kashmir, Lashkar-e-Taiba, is suspected of carrying out the attack.

Ms Rice's schedule has not been released, so it is not known whether she will visit the site of the killings in Mumbai, where six US citizens were among those killed.

But she will try to use the fading influence of a US administration in its last weeks in power to reduce tension between India and Pakistan.
