Vic police on lookout for firebugs

Posted December 3, 2008 20:00:00

Victoria Police are stepping up their efforts to catch firebugs this bushfire season.

Plain-clothed officers in unmarked cars will patrol high-risk areas in the Yarra and Dandenong Ranges this summer.

It is part of an operation aimed at preventing deliberately lit fires that cause millions of dollars damage every year.

Anyone caught faces up to 15 years in prison.

Detective Sergeant Martin Fleming says police are putting potential arsonists on notice.

"The message is if you want to come to the Yarra Ranges and light fires we will catch you," he said.

The public is being urged to report any suspicious activity to 000 or their local fire station.
